I actually cried when I read this.
From "A Rope and A Prayer", the fifth installation in a series by a New York Times journalist captured and held more than seven months by the Taliban.

The phone rang. This time, Kristen picked up.

“David?” she said, breathlessly. “David?”

“Kristen,” I said, savoring the chance to utter the words I had dreamed of saying to her for months.

“Kristen,” I said, “please let me spend the rest of my life making this up to you.”

“Yes,” she said. “Yes.”

Those articles are terrifying.

Pretty much. It was easier to read this knowing there was a great ending.

That's a good point. And I'm going to have to try to read through them when I'm not so depressed. I was actually not able to make it all the way through the first couple.

I just read the whole series myself too. It's a really incredible story (and yeah, I cried).

Absolutely. I thought it was so interesting, and so moving.

This sort of thing makes me come over all cynical. See you in the divorce courts in about ten to fifteen years?

I think you have to clarify what you mean with respect to this article. This is a guy who's talking to his wife for the first time in half a year, where every day, both of them faced the prospect that he might not be alive tomorrow.

I'm really not sure what your comment about the divorce courts mean, since I don't intend to get married in less than ten years.

I don't mean you. I mean displays of affection for public consumption. I just have an instinctive disbelief in them.

I believe it was real, but whether it was manufactured or if that really was the truth, the impact this makes on the reader is real.
